AMP Series Press Release
www.ampseries.com
June 08
Anticipation was in the air as haulers began arriving at Central Arkansas Speedway, Plummerville AR. If Saturday's show was going to be anything like the night before at Beebe Speedway, the fans were in for a real treat. Joining the field for the AMP event was Kevin Fike, Collierville TN and Stormy Deeryberry, Monticello AR. Regular AMP drivers, Andy Hockenhull and Rachel York were on hand to help support their fellow comrades even though they were unable to compete themselves due to mechanical issues from Friday's event. After the previous night of excitement the drivers and fans were pumped and ready to make some noise.
Once the dust settled from nineteen late super late models taking a few hotlaps, drivers made their final adjustments to the car, and the heat racing action got underway. Each of the three heat races brought with them a good mixture of new and experienced talent. Jeff Wells Jr, Trumann AR, Ian Samuel, Trumann AR and Billy Moyer Jr, Batesville AR, were the young guns who finished one, two, and three in the first heat.
Jon Mitchell, Texarkana TX and Kyle Beard, Trumann AR started the evening out where they left off the night before, racing for the first and second positions, while Charlie Cole, Marianna AR who has demonstrated some strong runs as of late, was right there with the leaders for a third place finish to put in the books.
Jon Kirby, Russellville AR, teammate Dwaine Hottinger also from Russellville, with Shane Diamant, Maumelle AR tore it up with the hammer down to end the heat races for the evening.
With the feature race just getting started, the cars entered turn one after the initial drop of the green flag and they were already three wide. Yep! I smacked my lips, Beebe brought the appetizer and main course, and Central was serving up the desert, we were going racin! Wells Jr, Kirby, and Beard were still three wide as they came out of turn three. Once they settled down to a perfect rhythm it was Mitchell out front with Kirby, Wells Jr, Beard, Hottinger, Moyer Jr and Gary Scott Christian making up the top six positions. Mitchell began to pull away from the group when the first caution came. Charlie Cole pulled into the infield, removed the hood of his #2 machine and was forced to call it a night. On the restart Samuel, Tippen, Diamant, Henson, Fisher, Murry, Deeryberry, Leal and Skinner who made up the rest of the field, were ready to contend with the top six leaders. After a few laps Mitchell again starts to pull away from the group, while Kirby, Beard, Wells Jr, Moyer Jr, Hottinger, and Christian fall behind in single file. This drew our attention to the racing battle going on in the middle of the pack as Tippen, Diamant, and Samuel exchange the lead and a little paint as they work for the eighth through tenth spots. The next group of hard chargers were Henson, Fisher, and Murry who were putting on a good show as they attempted to move forward. Once the leaders hit lap traffic, Beard was able to get around Kirby, but Mitchell had command and had gained a comfortable lead. The second caution of the evening came with mechanical woes for Terry Henson, but he wasn't alone, Tippen and Hottinger left the field with their own mechanical issues. On the restart Mitchell with his foot on the gas puts some distance between himself and Beard. Kirby, Wells Jr, Moyer Jr, and Christian again fell in behind in a single file fashion as Diamant was able to get around the 86B of Ian Samuel after a little back-n-forth racing between themselves and Clay Fisher adding to the mix. With the exception of Wells Jr getting alittle loose and sideways between turns three and four, but regaining control and holding on to his fourth place, the last few laps were uneventful. As the dust swarmed it was Jon Mitchell in his #5 GRT by Catman who able to have his cake and ice cream too, as he sweeps the weekend by winning both AMP events. Mitchell, who has won the last three AMP events, under went a post race inspection was found to be legal. Not only was it nice payday weekend for Jon, he is now leading the AMP point standings. You may want to keep a close eye on the AMP point standings by visiting the AMP website, because the drivers will be in action again next weekend with a double header and who knows how the points will shake down. If you are hungry for some great racing, come out and see the AMP drivers, you will leave satisfied and full!

Monticello Hosts the AMP Regulars for the 1st Annual Kenneth Mitcham Memorial Race
With the track rolled in, and hot laps completed, it was time for the AMP heat races to get underway. As each heat race finished, the fans were given an early indication of how strong the field of competition was going to be for the 16 Late Models that would later make up the 30 lap Kenneth Mitcham Memorial Feature event.
Out of the bull pen first leading all 10 laps of his heat race was AMP 2007 defending Champion Jon “Catman” Mitchell. Mitchell had some close company in tow as the 2007 Rookie of the Year, Kyle Beard, and the current AMP points leader Allen Tippen charged in a one-two-three succession across the start finish line to get the evening heated up.
Next on the track was “Charging Charlie” Cole whose strong run was able to duplicate the previous heat race and he to led all ten laps. As Cole saw the checkered flag, he brought with him the March 30th defending Monticello AMP Feature winner Jeff Chanler, and well known local driver Doug Showah.
With two heat races down and one to go, the third heat raced, proved to be a triple hitter. Jody Prince, Sibley LA, led all ten laps followed by a fellow statesman Mark Andrews, Marion LA, and “The Rocket” Terry Henson of North Little Rock AR. As the dust settled and the engines were briefly quieted, the fans were able to catch their breath and begin to ponder their stacked and packed feature line-up.
Feature races are always started with the past, and “the past” is usually from a short time ago, a result of a heat race, and within the same night. For tonight’s race we went a little further into the past, to last year’s season, to get things started. The first two cars to make their way onto the field were two modified cars. These cars were the honorary pace cars for the Kenneth Michem Memorial Feature Race and were being piloted by Mitchem’s nephew and son-in-law. A tribute about Kenneth was read to his family and fans. As part of the ceremony Monticello Speedway also extended sympathy to the Mitchem family with a bouquet of flowers that were placed on the back of one of the pace cars in memory of Kenneth’s father who passed away last week. Although the racing community is passionate about some good ole fashion, fender rubbing racing, they are just as compassionate to remember and honor those that they have lost due to the sport they are a part of. Once the driver introductions and the four wide salute led by Mitchem’s family was complete, the fans were on their feet, and the drivers were ready to honor a fellow competitor and friend by doing what they know and love most race.
At the drop of the green flag the race was on. As 16 cars flew past the flag stand and made their way around the track, Jon Mitchell would be the one out front to lead the first lap. Doug Showah would hit hard on a retaining tire on lap two to bring out the first caution, do damage to his car and ultimately end his night. Mitchell led the first four laps with Beard, Chanler, Tippen, and Cole rounding out the top five. On lap five Beard would get around Michell and take the lead as the remaining three drivers mixed it up some but continued to hold onto the top five spots.
Beard would lead the next eleven laps. Mitchell would reach the bumper of the eighty-six but was unable to get around him until lap twenty-four when Mitchell slide around Kyle for the lead and held on to bring home the checker flag, with Beard finishing second.
As Beard and Mitchell raced for the first two spots the rest of the field was busy as well. The man on the move was Arkansas driver Mike Bowers who by lap eleven moved from his tenth starting spot up to sixth. After a caution on lap twelve, the restart proved eventful for Jeff Chanler. Chanler who restarted fourth dropped below the cone and was penalized and forced to move to the rear of the field. This put the defending feature race winner on an up hill battle, but he forged through and was able to bring home a eighth place finish. Tippen moved into the third position which he had command over since lap four, held it to the finish. Bower’s was able to get around Cole and would take home a fourth place finish for his efforts. Cole was able to hold off Andrews, Henson and Taylor as they mixed it back-n- forth for fifth place bragging rights. Terry Henson who had another great night brought it home in sixth, while Taylor finished seventh. Mark Andrews and Clay Fisher rounded out the top ten. Rookie of the Year contender Jeff Wells Jr finished eleventh, Andy Hockenhull finished twelfth, and Rachel York who had an ill handling car was able to finish in the thirteenth spot. Wells Jr, Hockenhull, and York make up three of the seven drivers who are qualified for the AMP 100% Bonus Award along with Tippen, Mitchell, Beard, and Fisher, making it a profitable night in more than one way.

Starting 20th position in the pack, Kyle Beard had his work cut out for him, if he wanted to make his presence known. to begin picking off his fellow competitors at a steady pace. Grabbing the crowds attention he soared around the topside of the track with lightning speed. As he passed the
